Alaska & The Yukon
Yukon Territory
People don’t realize how big Alaska is.
From the Pribilof Islands to Ketchikan in the southeast, the distance is greater than from San Francisco to New York. It’s impossible to get a sense of “Alaska.” You can only get a sense of different parts of Alaska. Our trips cover approximately 10,000 sq. miles, an area roughly the size of Maryland. Small planes take us to where very few tourists go. Boutique camps, lodges and yachts ensure a personal experience with guides and locals unlike almost all regular tours. The entire trip covers tundra, high altitude mountains and forests, low altitude forests with thousands of streams thick with wildlife, and what may be the most beautiful spot on earth, Prince William Sound. This is an adventure! Rooms and cabins are modest, but what’s waiting outside them for you is a panorama of memories the likes of which you can’t imagine until you’ve seen it yourself!

Nothing is carved in stone (or glacier!) regarding our day’s activities, but usually this morning allows for a wonderful kayak off the open sea into a beautiful, scenic inlet. The area is a very rich ecosystem supporting black bears, moose, coyotes, and a plentiful marine environment. We may also kayak to Puffin Island for a truly wondrous look at a low tide vertical intertidal zone. This zone is home to hundreds of sponges, periwinkles, whelks, sea stars, sea cucumbers and urchins to just name a few species who literally hang here awaiting the return of the high tide. Back on board the ship over lunchtime we sailed to South Marble Island to view a large Steller Sea Lion Haul Out and a seabird-nesting rookery before continuing to cruise to Dundas Bay. Our hike at Dundas includes some fun strawberry picking where we learn about and taste native plants and revel in the glorious flower strewn meadows. Spoor or otter, bear, moose and wolves are regularly seen here on the beach. Then back to the boat for a brief journey up Dundas Bay learning about native history and lore of this area followed by dinner.
