EWT Safari Guides

JimGuideJIM HECK is cofounder and President of EWT.  He has guided safaris for EWT since 1976.  Jim’s long career in Africa began with the Kenyan Government’s department of Education.  Prior to that he and his wife, Kathleen Morgan, worked for two years at the Paris headquarters of UNESCO.
Jim’s passion for enthusing travelers about Africa is legend.  He has an extremely popular and loyal following of past travelers, and equally loyal readers of his frequent blog and other writings, particularly his award-winning novel, Chasm Gorge, which is set in Kenya.  He is widely considered one of the foremost experts on Africa, and East Africa in particular.
Jim lives in Galena, Illinois, with his wife, Kathleen Morgan, who cofounded EWT and continues to manage the day-to-day operations of the company.

SteveGuideSTEVE TAYLOR guides for EWT around the world. He is Director Emeritus of the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, retiring in 2012 after serving the Cleveland community for 24 years. Prior to that he was the Director of the Sacramento Zoo.
Steve has more than 35 years guiding experience, having led hundreds of enthusiastic travelers to Africa and beyond. His unique life experience was founded on presenting the great wildernesses and animals of the world to wide and varied public audiences, and this has allowed him to craft an interpretative skill generally lacking from many natural history guides.
Of his many awards and credentials, Steve is particularly passionate about those earned by the Cleveland Zoo’s popular “Elephant Crossing” which he shepherded from its inception.
Steve lives in Rocky River, Ohio, with his wife, Sarah, who is the controller for the Cleveland Indians baseball team.

JUSTIN STEVENS is a Canadian with a deep passion for hockey yet he spent more than his last decade in the African bush as one of the continent’s most sought-after camp managers in Botswana and Tanzania. He guides for EWT throughout Africa. His hard earned experience in the African bush follows higher education in conservation, hospitality and photography uniquely pairing qualities not found in most safari guides.

Justin is an excellent communicator, capable of easily sharing his deep passion for wildlife with visitors from all over the world.  His excitement spans the smallest to the largest, although he admits a special love for cats and elephants.  He may be the only guide in Africa to have had his shoes chewed by a pair of leopard cubs!

TumainiGuideTUMAINI MEISHA manages EWT’s ground operations in East Africa. He owns and manages the six specially-outfitted Landcruisers used by EWT safaris in Kenya and Tanzania. Prior to joining EWT in the early 2000s, Tumaini worked as a chief driver/guide for a number of Tanzanian tour companies.
Tumaini’s life-long knowledge of the great wildernesses of East Africa gives him a privileged perspective of how things are changing and an acute ability to predict wild animal events. Guests who’ve traveled with Tumaini refer to his almost uncanny ability to find special situations of memorable drama on the veld.
Tumaini lives in Arusha, Tanzania, with his wife and four children.
