Contact EWT for the best international air fares and for recommendations on how to use your frequent flyer miles. Day 1: OKONJIMA
The tour starts in Windhoek. After a mid-morning pick-up, we will travel north, stopping at small towns along the way. We will visit Okahandja, Namibia's largest wood carving market, an excellent place to shop for Namibian souvenirs. Continuing north through farmland, we will arrive at Okonjima mid afternoon, in time to set up camp and relax. This afternoon in Okonjima, we will also visit the African Foundation, a conservation concern that specializes in African big cats, particularly cheetah. We will tour the Foundation and be able to meet, close-up, cheetah that are part of the rehabilitation project. Most animals currently living at Okonjima have been rescued from desperate situations, orphaned or caught in a trap. The objective of the rehabilitation process is to reintroduce the animal back into the wild. After the educational tour, we will return to camp for dinner under the African stars. Overnight at Adventure Camp. [ -l-d]
Day 2: ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK
After an early start, we continue north and pass through small towns, making short stops for fresh supplies and fuel. Our first stop is the mysterious Lake Otjikoto, Namibia's largest permanent natural lake, where we learn about the history of this unusual landmark. Continuing to Namutoni camp in Etosha National Park, we arrive for lunch and relaxation time before heading into the park during the cool of the late afternoon for our first game drive. After dinner, there are still more opportunities to see Etosha's big game at Namutoni's floodlit waterhole. Situated on the boundary of Namutoni and easily reachable on foot, elephants are regular visitors to the waterhole. There is also a good chance of seeing other species of game as well. Dinner and overnight at Adventure Camp. [b-l-d]
Day 3: ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK
A full day of game driving. We leave early to enjoy the cool morning air as we game drive our way through Etosha to Halali camp, in the middle of the park. Along the way we visit several water holes and are afforded splendid views of the massive Etosha Pan, part of the Kilahari Basin. The game viewing is usually excellent and we have a good chance to see new species that are not normally seen on the Namutoni side of the park. We stop at Halali for rest and a leisurely lunch. There is time to visit the Halali waterhole and to use the swimming pool and bar facilities before continuing to game drive down to Okaukuejo. Okaukuejo is famous for its waterhole, which has been described as one of the "best game viewing opportunities in Southern Africa". Black rhino, elephant, lion and numerous species of antelope are usually seen. Situated on the doorstep of our camp, we arrive for dinner and overnight at Adventure Camp. [b-l-d]
Day 4: OASE HIMBA VILLAGE
Leaving Etosha, we journey south with a short drive to the small town of Kamanjab. We continuing onward to find the Himba Tribesmen, the only traditionally functioning Himba community outside the far north Kaokoland region of Namibia. These tribes people have migrated here, lifestyle and customs intact, and follow their traditional way-of-life. Their village, Oase Village, is located about 10 to 12 miles outside Kamanjab. The exact location varies as the Himba occasionally move to a new location. During the afternoon, we are invited into Oase Village to meet these local tribes people. We will have a specialist guide who will translate for us. We will learn about marriage customs, traditional food and the mysteries of the local religion, "Holy Fire". Dinner and overnight at Adventure Camp. [b-l-d]
Day 5: BRANDBERG MOUNTAIN
Today we travel into one of the most beautiful desert regions in Namibia, Damaraland. We drive south to the capital of this region, the small town of Khorixas, and then detour west to the Petrified Forest geological site, to visit the ancient Bushman rock engravings at Twyfelfontien. At both locations, we will have local guides to take us on a short guided tour. We then head deeper into the desert to Namibia's highest mountain, The Brandberg, (8441 ft). Brandberg Mountain is an ancient Bushman spiritual site and tonight we will sleep in the shadow of this giant granite monolith. Dinner and overnight at Adventure Camp. [b-l-d]
Day 6: SKELETON COAST
Starting early in the cool of the morning, we hike into the mountains with our guide to see the world famous "White Lady" rock painting. Attributed to Bushman artists, the white lady panel is believed be more than 20,000 years old. Back on the road, we see more beautiful Damaraland scenery. Our first stop is the small town of Uis, an old mining town, and one of the best places to buy semi-precious stones, for which Namibia is famous. Here, rough amethyst, tourmaline and other stones can be found at bargain prices. We then turn directly west and cross the"gravel plains" on our way to the Atlantic Ocean and the Skeleton Coast. Meeting the ocean at Henties Bay, we travel north along the coast to visit the seal colony at Cape Cross. At certain times of the year, there can be as many as 100,000 Cape Fur seals. The next destination is Swakopmund, Namibia's premier seaside town. We will arrive late afternoon in time to explore the town on foot before sunset. Tonight we sample one of the excellent restaurants - dinner is on your own. The seafood in Swakopmund is superb. Your guide will offer to organize a group meal in a local restaurant. Participation is recommended but not required. Overnight in a chalet accommodation. [b-l- ]
Day 7: DEPART
We will spend the morning relaxing in Swakopmund. Swakopmund is a pleasant seaside town with lots of shops, a good stretch of beach (although the Atlantic is quite cold here) and an open-air curio market. There is also a good museum and the Namibian National Marine Aquarium is located here. Alternatively, there are various optional activities that can be arranged. These include airplane and micro light flights over the desert, scenic drives, fishing trips (both from the beach or in a boat), four-wheel motorcycle (quad bike) trips into the desert, sand boarding trips (also in the dunes), skydiving, surfing, bird-watching and many other activities. Your tour guide will discuss possible options with you before you reach Swakopmund and will offer to make bookings in advance of your arrival. This is the last day of our trip. After lunch, we will drive back to the capital city where you will be dropped off at your accommodation. The drive back to Windhoek will take about 4 to 5 hours. [b-l- ]
