  A safari to truly celebrate Africa's untamed spaces where few tourists are found and the raw wildness of the African bush reigns supreme. This safari includes three very large and mostly undeveloped game parks: Niassa in Mozambique, and the Selous and Ruaha in Tanzania. The three share above all pristine ecosystems hardly visited by tourism, with very wild big game. In fact all these areas were once hunted, and the wildlife can be skittish at times when compared to the more visited protected wildernesses. But the sense of awe and majesty that you'll take from this experience, along with quite a lot of execptional game viewing, will more than compensate for the slightly fewer animals that might be seen.

The prices include:
** Guaranteed window seats in specially outfitted Safari Landrovers with pop-top roofs ensuring sun protection;
** Meals as detailed in brackets following each day's description below;
** Five local flights: Pemba to Niassa and Niassa back to Pemba, Dar to the Selous, the Selous to Ruaha, and Ruaha back to Dar;

** Comprehensive pre-trip material with discount coupons for travel gear and equipment.

Additional expenses not included:

International travel from Pemba to Dar-es-Salaam is required in your international ticket. Contact EWT for the best international air fares and for recommendations on how to use your frequent flyer miles.
Day 1: PEMBA
The safari begins in the historic Mozambique port of Pemba. Good air service into this important little city is available from Johannesburg, Maputo or Dar es Salaam. If you arrive early sightseeing can be arranged. The town was founded by the Portuguese in 1904 as Porto Amalia, after a queen of Portugal, and remains famous for its Portuguese colonial architecture. The sea faring Portuguese chose the area because it is the third largest bay in the world. Although the city is the hub for visiting some of the most beautiful and isolated beaches, reefs and secluded islands left on earth, it is not itself a beach destination. (Fabulous beaches and islands exist nearby. Contact us for extensions.) Overnight at the city's finest hotel, The Pemba Beach Hotel & Spa.  [no meals]
Day 2: NIASSA
This morning small aircraft take you into one of the newest and most remote big game wildernesses in Africa, the Niassa Reserve. Until a few years ago, this was part of an infrequently used hunting concession: rarely used because it is so remote. The big game is spectacular, especially elephant, and the Lugenda Bush Camp is the only property within the protected are of nearly 16,500 sq. miles. This makes it the third largest reserve in Africa, but the only reserve in Africa with only a single tourist property. Activities begin immediately after lunch and include vehicle game drives and game walks. The camp provides gourmet dining and has a beautiful swimming pool, making it one of the very few oases of comfort in truly wild and remote Africa.  [b-l-d]
Day 3: NIASSA
Guests are guided by a group of professionals with unique experience in Niassa. The wildlife here, including nearly 12,000 elephant, has not been habituated to visitors and is extremely wild. Game drives must be conducted with much more sensitivity than is the case elsewhere, both to achieve success while keeping safety paramount. At the same, game walks are common and exciting, and as is normal, the wildlife generally flees the small line of visitors long before their presence is known. The camp is set in a pristine wildlife area between very thick miombo woodlands and unusual and striking granite inselbergs, giving the area a real jungle character. Guests can individually tailor their activities from very ambitious trekking to less time-consuming driving. The luxury tents are a fabulous personal retreat, and the view from the camp area is breath taking. Meals, activities and overnight at Lugenda Bush Camp.  [b-l-d]
Day 4: NIASSA
The seclusion of the area has provided the natural protection for so much wildlife. In addition to some of the highest concentrations of elephant, giraffe, buffalo and other typical big game, there are decent chances of seeing unusual animals like wild dog. And there are equally good chances of seeing three endemic subspecies, the Niassa Wildebeest, Boehms Zebra and Johnston's Impala. Meals, activities and overnight at the Lugenda Bush Camp.  [b-l-d]
Day 5: DAR es SALAAM
Small aircraft take you back to Pemba in time for your flights to Tanzania. On arrival in Dar es Salaam, you'll be personally met and privately transferred to Movenpick's Royal Palm in downtown Dar.  [b- - ]
Day 6: SELOUS
Short morning flight from Dar into the Selous, Tanzania's and Africa's largest game park, at just over 22,000 sq. miles. It's composed of enormous marshlands, rivers and uninhabitable bush perfect for wild game. A number of great rivers define the wilderness, especially the magnificent Rufiji. On arrival you'll be met by Landrovers that take you into the Selous Safari Camp for lunch, to begin three wonderful days of exotic game viewing along the great Rufiji River in the northeastern edge of the Reserve.  [b-l-d]
Day 7: SELOUS
Much of the game viewing in the Selous is by boat on the great Rufiji River above which the camp is located. You'll motor past shores packed with crocodile and hippo, and watch for the lines of brilliant color darting around, Africa's bee-eater birds. The towering doum palms, the park's signature, strike memorable silhouettes in the famous sunsets of the area. Game walks can also be arranged, and all-day excursions to interior areas of the park will allow you to see some of Africa's largest crocodiles in areas near Lake Tagalala. You'll also take vehicle drives, likely encountering elephant, buffalo, giraffe and a wide array of other big game. The Selous is so little visited, that it provides some of the last opportunities in the continent to see very rare animals like wild dog. Meals, activities and overnight at the Selous Safari Camp.  [b-l-d]
Day 8: SELOUS
One of your days is scheduled for an ambitious 13k walking safari to a modest fly-camp set up in a very remote area of the reserve. (You can opt out of this, if you prefer to remain in the main camp.) You'll drive to a staging area, where you begin the walk with armed guides, normally following sand rivers. The thrill of these extended walks and the chance of encountering big game truly gets the adrenalin going! A maximum of six guests form each excursion. At the end of the day you arrive at your little bush camp with its dome-shaped tents providing unimpeded views of the African night-sky. They are fully insect proof, with fitted ground-sheets and are spacious enough to stand up in. Beds are comfortable mattresses with crisp linen, and outside each individual tent is a stand with basin, towels and soap dish, reminiscent of old safari days. There is a bucket shower- with hot water available at all times of the day - located in a way that provides enthralling views of virgin Africa. Then, enjoy a meal you won't believe can be created in such wildness, before retiring to sleep with the sounds of wild Africa enveloping you! Meals and overnight at Adventure Camp.  [b-l-d]
Day 9: RUAHA
A Morning flight takes you even further into the interior of Africa over unpopulated and mountainous areas of central Tanzania. Arrive in Ruaha National Park, the centre of the country, where you'll be met by guides and safari vehicles for the game drive from the airstrip to a remote lovely camp tucked under fig trees. Some of the scenery here is reminiscent of America's great southwest, with its jutting mountains and deep canyons. The Great Ruaha River and its tributaries defines the park and attracts the extraordinary amounts of game found here. Game viewing by vehicle begins immediately after lunch. Meals and overnight Mwagusi Safari Camp.  [b-l-d]
Day 10: RUAHA
This marvelous, huge park is composed of a series of great sand rivers that plow through dense woodland with wide sand embankments. It's particularly famous for its elephant, but the amount of all types of game is impressive, and more rare game like greater kudu is as common as gazelle are in the north. During the game viewing, today, it is also likely you will encounter lesser kudu, one of the most rare and beautiful of East Africa's antelope. The scenery remains expansive and stunning, with horizon to horizon views of rolling veldt intersected by great rivers. For this great and very wild safari, this is the perfect place to end. Meals and overnight at Mwagusi Safari Camp.  [b-l-d]
Day 11: DEPARTURE
After a final morning of game viewing you fly back to Dar and transfer to the Royal Palm where your room is available throughout the day. Later tonight your transfer agent will privately take you to the airport for the overnight departures home.  [b- - ]
