EWT began as an operator of worldwide natural history tours for zoos, museums, alumni associations and other not-for-profits. In the late 1980s a separate division, EWT Consulting, was formed which provides media placement, worldwide marketing strategy and strategic business planning for foreign tour companies.

The EWT headquarters are in Galena, Illinois, near the Mississippi River.

EWT has practiced "Fair Trading" policies for more than 15 years. On average, of every dollar paid EWT for a tourist service in the Third World including Africa, more than two-thirds actually reaches the individual companies and employees in the Third World. This is roughly twice the norm for American travel wholesalers.

EWT achieves this practice by working directly with the foreign companies that ultimately provide the consumer service. Our association in East Africa is our model for the entire world. The transport and inbound managing company for Kenya is Salesmark Tours & Travel, owned and operated by local Kenyans. In Tanzania EWT's transport and inbound managing company is Next Safaris, owned and operated by local Tanzanians. Our unusually close managerial and business ties with these companies not only insures Fair Trading, but allows us together to provide quality services at reduced costs to the consumer.
